The Work
As a writer and editor I've worked with brilliant scientists and academics, outrageous photographers, raucous artists, and determined activists trying to make a difference in the world. For many years I worked as a freelance journalist, covering animal activism, urban renewal and environmentally responsible architecture, among many other subjects. One of my favorite stories was about the LA County bomb squad. They were a remarkably calm bunch with steady hands. One day I followed the bomb-sniffing dogs around and blew up a pipe bomb. Kaboom!
Most days my work is less hair-raising - but it's still interesting. In my profession I learn something new almost every day. I shift voices and styles to meet a range of readers. I put on and pull off my editor's hat. And in my down time, when I'm not writing to make a living, I work on poetry, the craft most dear to my heart.
